Xeomin vs. Botox: What's Actually Different
By Dr. Kamalesh Shah
Patients ask this almost every week: is Xeomin better than Botox, or is it just a cheaper alternative? Neither framing is quite right.
The active ingredient is the same idea
Both Xeomin and Botox use botulinum toxin type A to temporarily relax the muscles that cause expression lines. They work through the same basic mechanism and treat the same areas: frown lines, forehead creases, crow's feet.
The difference is in what surrounds it
Botox and most other neuromodulators contain accessory proteins alongside the active toxin. Xeomin is often called a "naked" injectable because it's purified to remove those additional proteins. In theory, fewer accessory proteins may reduce the chance some patients develop antibody resistance to the toxin over repeated treatments, though this matters most for patients who've had frequent injections over many years.
For most patients starting or continuing routine treatment, the practical difference in results is small. Onset time, how long results last, and how natural the outcome looks depend more on dosing and injector skill than on which brand is used.
What actually matters more
The variable that affects your results most isn't the brand name on the vial. It's whether your provider takes the time to map how your face moves before injecting, doses appropriately for your muscle strength, and adjusts based on how you've responded to treatment before.
That's the conversation we have at every consultation, brand aside. If you're deciding between options, ask your provider to walk you through their reasoning, not just their price list.
Curious which option makes sense for you? Book a consultation and we'll talk through it honestly.
