Microdermabrasion and Microneedling: What You Need to Know

One of the biggest trends of the beauty world nowadays are micro-treatments. It’s so in-depth that beauty stores can be scoured for over-the-counter products and tools meant for the effects to be done at home. It’s a cosmetic craze that has swept the world by storm.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure that is non-invasive, usually with crystals being sprayed or rubbed onto the skin with a special wand. The aim of microdermabrasion is to take away the topmost layer of the skin, thereby making the skin appear younger. Aside from crystals, there are also diamonds involved. The former is a lot like sandblasting while diamond use is a lot like sandpapering.

Treatment can be done on a weekly or monthly basis. Costs run from $75 all the way to $200. Some patients who receive the treatment report immediate results, including smoother, brighter skin. Others report seeing results over a certain period of time.

Downtime is minimal, typically a few days of peeling and flaking if you use AHAs or BHA, or a few minutes of down time if you get an IPL treatment that uses cold bands to cause sunburn-like damage. This is because the latter generally triggers skin cell turnover.

People who have pigment issues, acne, fine lines and blackheads will benefit from this. In some cases, mechanical trauma is credited with stimulating superficial production of collagen. This helps to fill out fine lines.

Microneedling

A newer treatment, microneedling, involves pushing a single needle into the skin and pushing down on it repeatedly to puncture microscopic holes in the skin. This stimulates what refers to as “wound healing,” which can also stimulate the production of collagen. It’s usually done in intervals of a month (4 weeks) to 6 weeks.

The costs are anywhere from $200 to $1500. It reaches well over a thousand when the microneedling in question involves platelet-rich plasma. (The colloquial term for this is “the vampire facial.”)

There are two types of microneedling: medical needling and cosmetic needling.

  • Cosmetic Needling – These make use of a short needle so that microscopic perforations in skin help collagen production along.
  • Medical Needling – These have longer needles than the cosmetic sort. As a result, the treatment is deeper and much more effective.

The skin concerns that microneedling addresses include, but are not limited to:

  • Acne scarring
  • Fine lines
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Uneven texture
  • Wrinkles

This gives off younger-looking skin, with signs of aging decreasing considerably.

Do-It-Yourself Micro-treatments: Are They Advisable?

While it was mentioned above that the market is full of products that can be purchased over-the-counter for DIY micro-treatments, the effects aren’t as in-depth as the real thing. Sometimes, people don’t end up cleaning tools properly; that can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and other issues.

Conclusion

Micro-treatments have been rising in popularity on the global beauty scene for some time now. Microdermabrasion will buff away dead skin cells for a smoother, more radiant surface. Microneedling stimulates collagen production, which gives the skin renewed life and addresses issues including fine lines as well as acne scarring.
