Problems Afoot: All of the Basics about Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are known to be swollen, twisted veins that require treatment to shrink. A few dangerous complications could arise from them, but they are still relatively rare. Nonetheless, they can still cause an offset of pain and annoyance if you overlook the necessary treatments. They most often occur in the legs, and this is because of gravity. When the blood is pumped from your heart, it must fight against gravity to reach your lower extremities.

Being commonly found in the lower part of your body, they are prevalent in the calves and lower thighs of both men and women, though they tend to be a little more common for women because of their wider pelvis. Besides being an aesthetic concern, they can also indicate a condition known as deep vein thrombosis, which is when a blood clot forms in the vein, causing it to swell rapidly.

This is not something you want, so if you have any kind of swelling or strange feeling in your legs, do not hesitate to go and have it examined.

The Known Varicose Vein Treatments

The treatment of varicose veins depends on the severity of the case, but they can be relieved by several different treatments. Don’t delay yourself and go to a doctor!

The first known varicose vein treatment involved the use of surgical ligation. In this treatment, the veins are tied in a way that they are eliminated in a sense. But this procedure is not easily performed, and it is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.

A more straightforward method involves the use of a technique called sclerotherapy. In this, a soft and pressure-injected chemical is administered straight into the veins going to the heart. The chemical softens the vein walls, and then the liquid is removed by the body’s natural processes. The veins then shrink and are eliminated from the body.

Another method is by injecting collagen medicine, which is used to fill the valves in the veins. This causes the valves to open and close, which would, in turn, make the vein walls strengthen and thicken, thus reducing the size of the veins. This is the easiest of all the methods to perform, though it may need to be repeated for more severe cases.

Using compression stockings is also a standard method. These are special stockings usually used to prevent the formation and progression of blood clots.

The Known Varicose Vein Symptoms

Varicose veins can be hard to deal with, especially if they are painful and irregular. Yes, they are medically treatable, but that doesn’t mean you should wait until the problem worsens. Consult a doctor immediately if you find any of these symptoms:

  • Swelling and/or bulging veins
  • Aching and/or burning in the legs
  • Painful red spots
  • A sense of fullness in the legs
  • Back pain
  • Heavy feeling
  • A burning discomfort

Conclusion

There are plenty of things to do to make your legs feel better, like proper exercise and staying hydrated. You could also wear compression stockings, use a calf muscle massager, or use a massage device that can help you out with the pain.

If the pain persists, you might want to go for some varicose vein treatments. This is what your doctor will recommend to you, anyways.
